Warning: this post is long and has nothing to do with weight loss (I guess you could stretch it and say it does because I was exercising when it happened). It also mentions bodily waste and mild drama. But I'm really curious to get other opinions. AITA, or is my neighbor?

Yesterday morning I took my dog on a walk. About 15 minutes later I got a text from a guy in our neighborhood. It said “You left something in our front yard this morning. When you let your dog take a dump in our yard I expect you to clean it up every time. Better yet find another yard.”
I was very taken aback by how confrontational this text was. I thought about it for a while before responding.
My first thought was, “My dog didn’t take a dump in your yard. She peed. You want me to clean up the yellow snow?”
“Find another yard? Oh, yeah, because I singled out your yard, I purposefully choose your yard and tell my dog to take a dump!”
“How did he know it was me? Did he happen to be looking out the window as we walked by? Did he have security cameras and look? Did he just see my dog squat to pee and assumed it was poop? Did he even go outside to check “what I left” in his yard?”
“Maybe she did poop? It was a pee squat and I saw yellow snow, but maybe she pooped a little too, she had some diarrhea the other day”
“Do people really expect dog owners to pick up snow their dogs yellow? Do most people expect people to not let their dogs pee or poop in people’s yards? I always pick up my dog’s poop, even if I forgot to bring a bag, after I get home I’ll come back and clean it up. But I never thought about cleaning up pee.”
After kids got out the door for school, I walked back over by myself to look and clean up if I could. I didn’t see any poop or the yellow snow, I’m guessing it had already melted, there wasn’t much snow initially. Or he cleaned it up, but I think that’s highly unlikely.

After I got back home I responded, 30 minutes after his text: “I’m sorry. I came back to your yard just now to clean it up but I could not find it. I will not let it happen again.”
5 minutes later he simply replied. “Thank you”

I did walk the same route this morning and didn't let my dog do her business in his yard, or anyone else's. I think that's what I'll try from now on. But I do think he was a jerk by how he handled the situation.

Do you expect dog owners to not let their dog do their business in your yard, or just expect them to pick up poop, or also expect yellow snow to be cleaned up?

you are a saint in my eyes. not only for the grace you exhibited but also for your conscientious attitude. You were perfect. I don't have a dog, but if I ever find myself befriended by one, I will aim to behave just like you.

Thanks Unity. I think what upset me the most was him implying that I'm an irresponsible dog owner, which I don't think is true at all. I love dogs, but I don't love when other people don't clean up after their dogs in my yard. Once we even got on camera a teenager walking a big dog that left runny poop over a long stretch of our sidewalk. It was so bad, we had to hose it off. That's the closest I've been to tracking down a dog owner and giving them an earful. I probably would have if I was 100% sure who it was.

wafflewitz, feeling judged by others sucks outloud; but you didn't earn that. That was not about you, that was about him. Other people are coming from their own head-space. You don't have to let that into your world. You are just aware of how it feels when dog-owners are irresponsible and you choose not to be that. That is a beautiful thing about you.

our neighbor is a town cop whos also national service, his wife is disrespectful and rude, and their 3 boys are entitled lil a-holes. They let their dogs roam town and thats against city ordinance. To top it off, we have to chase their 2 big male dogs outta our yard when our 4month female puppy IS ON A LEAD in our backyard, which is unfenced. ON TOP OF THAT, one of their dogs we call "Trashmaster 2000" cuz he will destroy our garbage bags and eat our trash for the poor garbage man the next day.....theres been a few times they leave their stuff in our yard so we toss it on top of our garbage....

Dazey, I'm so sorry, your neighbors sound truly terrible! Our old house, the next door neighbors called the cops about our dog once, said he was being aggressive. But when the cop came to our door, our dog didn't even bark, and the officer said our dog didn't look aggressive. The only time our dog did anything I could consider someone interpreting as aggressive was he ran a little beyond the property line and barked, but he didn't come close to touching her, and it was a normal bark, not aggressive. I should've called animal control on them, because their dog spent 99% of the time tied up to the dog house in the backyard, on a concrete pad that had piles of crap around it. We lived there for 7 years and I only saw them take that dog on a walk ONE time. And the dog would bark incessantly almost every night. And I'm sure they broke the noise ordinance, they had a band that would practice in their garage.

That is sad, about the dog tied up, whats the point in getting a pet but never enjoying their company and love?? We put our dogs out to go potty and they bark when ready to come in, if im not monitoring from the door. But we never leave them for hours and hours!! Thats emotionally damaging...🙀 Looks liko we've both hard our share of cruddy neighbors. Funny similarity, when we tried to adopt a dog from a shelter, they said our beagle was aggressive when she actually tucked her tail and kept running away from other dogs when trying to see which rescue she got along with. Shes a big cuddle bug, total opposite of aggressive.
