Katsolo’s photo posting of beautiful Shasta made me think about my own GSD, Henry. He was magnificent and he was my fierce protector.

We ran tirelessly together. Once, it was a dark midsummer night, he refused to proceed in the middle of the thick forest when a cacophony of treefrogs suddenly arose from the bottom of an unknown chasm. He forced me to stop, and we simply allowed the ominous sound pierce our being. The air was forbiddingly dense. It once was a land of the Lumbees and their fury was palpable. I thought about God and His grace, His wrath.
We loved autumn most of all. The burning orange of the dying leaves reflected on Henry’s back as he trotted. Its wavelike motion reminded me of red sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean, which brutal history of forced voyages still intact in our memory. I thought about God, His grace and His wrath again.
We adored the South. Together.
Life’s circumstances made us relocate to a prosaic place covered by asphalt, Walmart, nail salons, condominiums, and I painfully recall that Henry was unhappy about it. He missed our forest. The frogs appeared to have vanished from the earth. The colors of autumn leaves no longer danced on his back. He died shortly after the relocation, and I stopped running.
